Spring Cleaning Your Kitchen

No one likes cleaning. Well, except for my mom and maybe a few other people. But for the most part, cleaning isn’t high up on our list of “fun” activities. So why am I asking you to get into “Spring cleaning” mode in your kitchen? It’s not because I don’t want you to have fun, it’s because I DO want you to have fun. Let me explain.

A Gold Mine

I like to compare spring cleaning your kitchen to going to a thrift shop. You go in a little unsure of what you’re going to find. It could be nothing or it could be a total jackpot. It’s amazing all of the kitchen tools, equipment, utensils and food you’ll find in your kitchen during your spring cleaning. So pull it all out and see the pot of gold under the rainbow!

A Great Time to Purge & Organize

Now, let’s have even MORE fun! That’s right! It’s time to purge and organize. There is nothing more gratifying than getting rid of stuff you don’t need. De-clutter and then get it all organized so that you can see it and use it. Discard expired food. Place food that’s about to expire in your line of vision so that you can make use of it ASAP. Package up any cooking equipment and utensils you don’t plan on using anymore and bring them to your local thrift shop or shelter.

Wait! Clean First!

Before you put it all back, be sure you clean that pantry, cupboard, fridge and freezer first! Wipe down everything and pull out the vacuum to suck up crumbs and other bits of old food. A clean kitchen is beautiful, but it’s also healthy! Cleaning gets rid of germs and bugs that can make you sick. Now is also a good time to invest in a refrigerator thermometer if you don’t have one. Place it near the back of the fridge and check on it periodically. Yes, some refrigerators come with a thermometer, but often the readings aren’t accurate. So grab an inexpensive one from the store and use that instead. Keep your food safe by keeping the temperature inside your fridge around 40’F or below.

A Round of Applause

Once you’re done, stand back and admire your work! Seriously! There’s nothing better than a clean, well-organized kitchen! Take a mental note of how awesome you feel about it and how awesome it looks. Remember that feeling and use it as motivation to KEEP your kitchen this way. A good spring cleaning can be fun and the results are always worth it. So turn up the music, get into that kitchen and get a jump start on that spring cleaning!
