Fusion Popcorn

Sometimes the same old snacks get just a little… you know, uninspired.  I’m nuts about popcorn, eat it all the time.  So, I’m often looking for a new twist on an old favorite.  I love browsing around the Plan to Eat site and seeing what interesting things friends are making.  This rather adventurous popcorn recipe was adapted from just such an episode of browsing.  It’s spicy, sweet and has that umami thing going on from the powdered nori.

A few tips.  Make sure to keep the seasoning blend in a tight container so moisture doesn’t get in and make it stick together.  If you have a really high powered blender (I use a Vitamix) it can become super fine.  This is good because it sticks beautifully to the popcorn, but can be bad if you inhale it (think powdered sugar donuts).  Just put enough butter on the popcorn so it sticks really well so you’re not inhaling cayenne all through the movie.  You can put as much or as little as you’d like on the popcorn, but maybe start out small and build up.  You can also adjust the spiciness to your liking.

Some other crazy popcorn toppings we’ve tried and enjoyed are cinnamon and powdered cane sugar over coconut oil, soy sauce mixed in with melted butter and olive oil, organic ranch salad dressing mix, and nutritional yeast over butter.

Do you have a favorite popcorn topping?
