July had us glued to World Cup matches in the office (we got some work done too, promise!). We also launched a new Instagram series called “meal planning fails,” where we call out the most common planning mistakes and show you how to fix them. If your plan’s been falling apart lately, it’s worth a follow.

New Podcast Episodes

episode 137 - common meal planning mistakes
#137: The Most Common Meal Planning Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)

This week, we walk through six of the most common reasons meal plans fail, from not planning at all to planning so rigidly that there’s no room for change when life gets in the way. We talk about why looking at your schedule matters so much, how to include your family in the process, and why somebody else’s meal plan from Instagram probably isn’t going to work for your household. Plus, we share some practical ways we’ve pivoted our own plans midweek.

podcast episode 138: deep dives
#138: Deep Dives: Decoding Food Craving and Choosing the Right Onion

This week we’re trying something a little different! We each picked a topic to deep dive into without telling the other person what it was, and we’re sharing what we learned live on the podcast.
Riley kicks things off with a deep dive on food cravings. What they actually mean and what your body might be trying to tell you. We talk through what common cravings like sugar, salt, carbs, red meat, and dairy could signal about your nutrient levels, and why kids might actually be the best at listening to their bodies.
Then Roni takes us through a breakdown of every type of onion and when to actually use them. If you’ve ever wondered why a recipe calls for a shallot instead of a yellow onion, or why your onion tastes “hot”, we’ve got answers!

4 Ways to Get Out of a Meal Planning Rut

Getting unstuck takes a few small shifts in where you look for ideas. Here are four simple ways to break out of a recipe rut and get excited about meal planning again.

Santorini-Inspired Tomato Fritters with Whipped Lentil Dip

Tomato fritters (called tomatokeftedes) are a Santorini staple, and once you taste one fresh out of the oil, you’ll understand why. Crispy on the outside, tender and herby inside, with that unmistakable hit of ripe tomato and salty feta.

What’s the best app for a multi-store shopper?

Plan to Eat is the best meal planning app if you shop at multiple stores because the shopping list is fully customizable and allows for multiple store lists.

Stop Wasting Mental Energy on Your Shopping List

Creating a grocery list is hard because every time you open the fridge, you remember something you need to buy, but if you don’t write it down immediately, it’s gone.

Program Updates

The development team is working hard to make updates, squash bugs, and add new features to both the desktop and mobile app versions of Plan to Eat! The app’s beta program received some exciting updates last week, so if you’re a beta tester, be sure to update your app!

Desktop:

  • The Manage Gifts page now reflows on mobile devices — each gift stacks into an easy-to-read card instead of a wide, scrolling table.
  • Importing the same recipe twice in quick succession (for example, when a slow import is retried) no longer creates duplicate recipe drafts.

Highlighted Reviews

“Easy during a busy week because you’ve already planned your meals, reduces food waste and saves money to boot. Recipe importer is brilliant. Nutrition calculator is handy too. Shopping list generator takes out the guesswork and reduces impulse buying too!”
